BARRIER LIGHTS

Barrier Lights are designed to stop the cutting cycle if the light beams
are broken. Almost all the newer cutters are designed with barrier lights
and many of the older machines had them as an option. In some cases
they may be required by OSHA or other safety codes.

Problems with Light Barriers

<>        Many of the light barriers used on Polar paper cutters built between 1960 and 1974 are becoming increasingly difficult to keep in good working order due to age. When these machines were built, this was the best system available to keep the machines from cutting when the operator or his helper was reaching across the table. If working properly, they still do a good job of protecting the operator, but unfortunately, after more than thirty years of use, the systems are getting more difficult to maintain, and if they get weak or out of alignment, they may prevent the machine from cutting at all.
Older Polar cutters used reflected beams and vacuum tubes to detect the light beam. Repair of these oldest systems is very difficult. The use of more modern “photocells” greatly improved the efficiency and reliability of these systems, but recently these photocells have become obsolete.
Later model POLAR cutters used solid-state electronics for more reliability, but still used visible light beams which are inherently sensitive to dust. vibration, and alignment.
Today's Polar cutters use infra-red light beams and integrated circuits to eliminate these problems. Reliability of light barriers today is greatly improved, but existing systems cannot be retrofitted to older cutters.

Complete Replacement Systems

G B Cutter Service now has available a replacement barrier light system, which leaves all the original safety devices intact, but replaces the lights, photocells, and amplifier with solid-state, infra-red detectors. These new barrier lights are not affected by dirty lenses, mis-alignment, or vibrations from the cutter. Estimated life of each component is over ten years in constant use, and the components can be easily replaced with standard off-the-shelf parts. The new system is installed in the same type light housings as you are currently using, and in the oldest machines, an optional minor change in old wiring can even add a slight extra margin of safety.
